Marlborough
is an attractive market town in North East Wiltshire, lying in
the valley of the River Kennet on the southern edge of
the Marlborough Downs.
It
is renowned for its wide High Street (arguably the widest
in Britain),
of
Georgian
and Tudor
buildings. The back alleys behind the Georgian Colonnaded
shops are just waiting to be explored. The market is held on Wednesdays
and Saturdays.
Marlborough
offers a superb base for exploring the historic and beautiful countryside
by car, bicycle or on foot.
World
Heritage Sites
of Avebury, Silbury
Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow and Stonehenge are
within easy distance as is the Ridgeway.
For those who are looking for some
retail therapy a good selection of stylish,
independent
shops, cafes and restaurants will be found close by.
Alternatively Oxford,
Salisbury, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Bath are
an hour and London can be reached in
just over an hour.
Throughout the year there are a number of local events,
exhibitions and courses happening in and around Marlborough.
These include
the International Jazz Festival (July), Marlborough
College Summer School (July-August) Marlborough
Mop Fairs (October),
and a host of other events.
"Left
all the stress somewhere between the stones of Avebury and the
White Horses."
